I had first met and photographed Jack during the Humane League Walk for Animals last October. The following month I returned to Boston Common to specifically photograph Jack. I was so impressed with his spirit and the warm relationship between Jack and his dad. So I asked if we could do a session just for Jack. Jack was so speedy in his wheelchair I could hardly keep up!
Jack is part lab and part pit. At four years old, Jack jumped the wrong way, causing his injury. Jack is now seven years old and is quite able to maneuver around in his wheelchair.
Jack talking to his dad.

Jack was all for rolling on his back for tummy rubs!
Once again, I was struck and moved by the close relationship between Jack and his dad.
Whether Jack was in his wheelchair or out, he was an active and inquisitive dog. A number of passerby’s stopped and asked about Jack. Jack also had some fellow canine visitors that stopped to play for a bit! It was a wonderful experience and an inspiration to watch this full of life dog enjoy that autumn morning.

I was very excited to have the opportunity to photograph this handsome fellow. Logan is a 14 year old bay gelding thoroughbred. Logan has a blaze on his forehead and four white socks. I learned his grand sire is Northern Dancer, a famous Canadian race horse. Logan raced for about two to three years, but is now off the track. Logan suffered some type of accident during his time racing, leaving him blind in his right eye. Happily, Logan is now in the care of a loving owner, who provides the very best for him. She had to make the decision to have his eye removed a few years ago.

Logan also has kissing spine, which is an issue with two vertebrae rubbing together. It was a crisp and cool late autumn morning when I traveled to where Logan was stabled. When I arrived, he was getting groomed for his photo session.

When I was told beforehand about Logan’s issues, I wasn’t planning on meeting the full of life and spirited horse that I did. The loss of his eye or his back problems have not slowed him down at all! It was a great deal of fun to photograph this energetic horse.

At first Logan was more interested in eating grass, as opposed to posing for the camera, which was, of course, totally understandable. If I was a horse, I guess I’d rather be doing that too. However, obligingly, Logan was agreeable to standing and waiting while I clicked away. I think this photograph illustrates the “full of personality” character Logan possesses!

After photographing in the beautiful meadow, we headed back to the stables to photograph Logan there as well.

Next door to Logan, was another horse, who had an injury and had to remain in his stable. However, he had a great next door companion in Logan. The two horses seemed to share a special friendship. Here Logan looks over at his friend. And for myself, I couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable morning spent than that November one with the handsome Logan and his warmhearted caretaker.

Yep, still catching up on blogs from the end of last year. I had quite a full session that October day. Not only did I photograph Duvy, the boxer, but I also photographed three more dogs and two horses. The session for Duvy took place at the home of Scout and Ellie, so I also was scheduled to photograph these two lovely weimaraners as well.

Scout

Scout was so much fun. He was quite ready to play ball and had a great time chasing it down. He jumped, ran and played. When I asked him to stay though, he was a good boy and stayed just as I asked.

At one point, we went inside to take a few indoor photographs. Scout obliging settled in a chair and I caught a quiet moment.

Ellie

Ellie was still a young pup at the time of the session. She was full of energy. She also was quite happy to play ball.

She was a bit harder to get still shots of because of her young, exuberant nature, but she did take a few breathers!

It looks like someone’s sneaking up to try to get that ball Scout has in his mouth!

Thumbelina

Once Scout and Ellie’s photo session was completed, we couldn’t leave out cute, little Thumbelina!

Aspen & Royal

I enjoy being around horses and love photographing them. So once I learned Aspen and Royal were also in residence, I was happy to include them in the photo session too. Aspen and Royal were certainly curious about all the goings on.

It was a busy holiday season and I spent a good portion of it happily working on holiday cards for clients. One of my best experiences was Moose’s photo shoot. This was Moose’s first Christmas and his family wanted to document this special occasion. The handsome Saint Bernard puppy was very accommodating during his photo shoot.

Moose’s mom had created a beautiful, festive house filled with lovely holiday decorations. This was great for me, allowing for a great variety of shots, featuring Moose in his home. I think Moose has such soulful eyes and it was a goal to capture that in his photos.
This is Moose’s tree. His mom told me he particularly enjoyed checking out the ornaments on this tree, his favorite being the snowman. So you’ll note how high in the tree it’s placed.

Moose talking to Santa!

This was one of my favorites of the day, with Moose viewing the world outside. This was a great experience and I thank Moose’s parents for allowing to share this special time in his life.

When I first met Maddie, I knew how much I would love photographing her. My chance came this October. She is one of the happiest little dogs I have ever met. Maddie is a Coton de Tulear dog. She is full of spunk and energy. I had no idea how much energy until I found afterwards I was rather worn out after the session and well Maddie – she was still going strong.

I had walked past these white wild flowers and knew this would be a great place to photograph her. Her mom told me that Maddie was not a girly girl, but a tom boy. That was clearly evident as the session progressed.

Maddie played and frolicked, rolled and ran. This squirrel is one of her favorite toys. For a little dog, she certainly can jump pretty high.

At one point, Maddie was rolling down a hill and I had move quickly to catch her in action. I have to say I was a little worried she would roll into the pond at the rate she was going.

I do not know how anyone can not fall in love with her at first glance.

This is one of my favorites from the day. I call it Maddie’s starlet pose. It was a great day and a wonderful session.

On November 5, the Goodness Gracious Run for Rescue took place at Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary. Sponsored by Goodness Gracious dog and cat treats, the event was a big success, with many runners and walkers of both the two legged and four legged taking part. The proceeds from the event benefit select local non-profit, no-kill animal rescues and shelters. There were vendor booths and prizes. The day was sunny and beautiful for the event. Also prominently participating was Paws New England with several dogs attending, who were up for adoption. It was a great deal of fun meeting everyone and photographing (and getting kisses from) all the dogs. Here is a link to the photos I took that day: http://www.sheepishgrinphotos.net/Animals/Goodness-Gracious/19946583_5wJPSc I would like to share the dogs from Paws New England who need homes. It’s heartbreaking to know they are without loving families. If you are interested in any of these dogs, please contact Paws New England.

Calliope

Calliope

Oh my goodness, when I met this lovely girl, she was so affectionate. She just wanted to give kisses and sit on top of me. It was hard to get a photo of her because she wanted to sit right with me. Calliope is one to years old. She is a HUGE love bug. I wanted to take her home. Of course I wanted to take them all home.

Kora

Kora

The lovely Kora won the best costume prize. She is also around one to two years old. She was quite affectionate as well. Kora was having a wonderful playing with one of the other dogs, who participated in the event.

Donatello

Donatello

Donatello is still a pup at 7 months old. This cutie was having a blast. He was excited to be out and about, still displaying that puppy bouncy happy go lucky attitude. He has been without a loving home for most of his young life. His caretakers can’t understand why someone hasn’t scooped this pup up yet.

Jack

Jack

This sweet pooch was very happy to hang out by the doggy treat booth. Jack was returned from a foster home and now needs a new foster home. He is a handsome, young dog, with a gentle nature. He was also enjoying socializing with all the other dogs.

Kennedy

Kennedy

Little Kennedy was found wandering in the woods of Tennessee. He arrived here in New England just last week. Kennedy is 8 to 9 years old. This little guy was a bit shy, which was understandable with all the activity going on. I’ll bet he would make a great companion dog for someone.

Lurlene

Lurlene

Lurlene came to the attention of Paws New England as a stray. They suspect she was used for breeding, stuck in a crate with puppies. I hate to think about the fate of those puppies. In spite of her situation, Lurlene is a very sweet dog. This sweetheart was enjoying all the activity going on and interacting with everyone.

Tilly

This past Saturday, the Humane League’s walk for animals took place, starting at Boston common. I happened to be in Boston that day for another event, but wanted to take time to go and check it out. I wanted to learn more about the organization, as well as with the thought to photograph some of the four legged participants. I met David, who is the director of the Boston branch for the Humane League. It was also a pleasure meeting the other friendly members of the organization. The Humane League’s mission is to save the lives of as many animals as possible and to reduce animal cruelty. They try to reach out through education, campaigns and rescues. I’m hopeful we can set up an educational talk at Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary soon. The more people who can be reached about the inhumane animal farm practices, the better.

Because of the timing, I wasn’t able to participate in the walk itself, but I was able to meet some nice people and some pretty special dogs before the walk started.

This is Jack. He was one of the participants in the walk. He is part lab and part pit. This handsome fellow suffered an accident, losing the use of his hind legs. This didn’t slow him down though.Whether with his wheel chair or by dragging himself along, he was on the go. In fact, it was difficult for me to get photos of him, because he was moving so quickly from tree to tree, checking everything out. This was without his wheelchair, mind you! His dad told me at four years old, Jack jumped the wrong way, causing his injury. In spite of this, both Jack and his dad certainly have preserved. I came away with a great deal of admiration for both. There were many wonderful dogs who were taking part in the walk. I wish I had the time to photograph them all. Some I missed altogether because the walk was starting or because of the event’s distractions, I wasn’t able to get the best shots of some of the dogs I did photograph. I would like to share those that I did get, however.

Cassie

Eva

Maddie

Nastasha, along with her two husky siblings, also took part. Here she is getting hydrated before the walk! I hope the day was a successful one for the Humane League. If you would like to learn more about their organization, here is the link to their website: www.thehumaneleague.com Also on hand, were the House Rabbit Network: www.rabbitnetwork.org for house rabbit awareness and Grey2K USA:grey2kusa.org for the protection of greyhounds. If you get a minute, please check out these worthy organizations as well.

I did take some photos of other dogs during my day in Boston and will share those at a later date.

Last week I travelled to Plymouth to visit Black Feather Horse Rescue. I was asked to contribute to a calendar the rescue is doing, so took the opportunity, in addition to those photos I’ve taken over the years, to get some new photos. The rescue is located on beautiful land. Darlene, the owner, and I took Lady, a rescued pregnant mini horse out to get some new photos. Poor Lady has been shifted from place to place. Happily, however, she now has a permanent home, love and good care

Lady was very obliging. I think she enjoyed eating the grass. In fact, I was worried that all of her photos would have her with her head down eating, but fortunately she did look up every now and then.

While I know goldenrod may be weeds to some, an harbinger of allergies for others, I love the color they add to autumn’s palette.

I am very much looking forward to when her baby is born in March to photograph this mama and her little one!

Dallas

I also took photos of Dallas. Dallas is about 10 years old. He is recovering from his treatment for ringbone. He has responded well to the treatment. He is looking for a permanent home. He’s such a handsome boy! I’m looking forward to more visits and taking more photos of these wonderful horses.

I had a special request for a surprise birthday present canvas. In order to get it done for Tonka’s mom’s birthday, we had it scheduled the morning before hurricane Irene. Since it was such a big storm, I was concerned with the weather and even though it was due to come in the next day, the rain was a day ahead. However, fortunately, at that time, there was only wet grass. Tonka is a very wonderful corgi. I have taken quick candids of Tonka before, but this was his first ever dedicated session. He was a gem.

Even though it was a surprise, we were able to go over and take Tonka out in his yard to do his session, while his mom was away. He had a great time playing ball. For a little guy, boy can he run.

Tonka ran up and back, not missing a step. It was so fun watching him have such a good time. He was amazingly agile.

Of course after the session, the next day everyone in town lost power because of the power, myself for almost 48 hours, making it impossible to order the canvas for a couple days afterwards.

A little bit late, but his mom was finally surprised with a canvas of her handsome boy!
